A major row is going to erupt this week over Highland Regional Council's plans to develop parts of the Flow Country in Caithness for commercial peat production.
At the same time environmental groups are planning to launch a series of campaigns against the exploitation of peat throughout the UK, including a call to gardeners to boycott peat products. They say that the nation's peatlands are an internationally important natural resource which are in need of urgent protection.
