They were just eight words amongst many so memorable. But they signalled that something crucial had changed in the world’s efforts to cut the pollution that is wrecking the climate.
When US president-elect, Barack Obama, gave his historic acceptance speech to jubilant crowds in Chicago in November, he listed one of his biggest challenges as “a planet in peril”. And to combat the problem, he said, there would be “new energy to harness”.
After all the years of foot-dragging, obfuscation and environmental irresponsibility under President George W Bush, the US is now going to take climate change seriously. Obama’s key appointments have made plain that the days of climate change deniers in the White House are done.
