Nuclear power and nuclear weapons, the terrible twins of the 20th century, are supposed to be on their way out. Most countries have stopped building nuclear power stations, technologies for exploiting renewable energy are making advances, and Russia and the US are starting to dismantle a few of their nuclear warheads.
But that doesn't mean we can write off the nuclear industry. It is at the heart of the world's industrial and military establishment, and has gathered so much momentum since the 1940s that it is not just going to fade away. It is a powerful and malign beast that will not easily be put down.
